Hillia tetrandra has creamy white four-lobed flowers nestled among thick narrow green leaves

Hillia tetrandra

Native to Mexico, Central America, and parts of the Caribbean, this small shrub often grows as an epiphyte on trees in humid forests. Thick branches bear fleshy leaves that are rounded at their tips and narrowed toward their short, stout stalks. The white flowers have slender elongated tubes that open into broad, spreading lobes. Long narrow capsules develop after flowering and release small seeds furnished with tufts of hairs. The species also occurs among rocks in mountain habitats. Photographed in Florida.
