Originating presumably from eastern Asia, the plant known commonly as Chinese Hibiscus has become a classic for the tropical garden. It's known for its vibrant, large, and brightly colored flowers. A plethora of medicinal benefits are associated with this species, including support for cholesterol and blood sugar management, hair growth, skin cancer prevention, weight loss, liver health, immune system boosting, and even depression and fever alleviation. It's also noted for its wound-healing properties when its extract is consumed. Besides medicinal purposes, the flowers are edible, often described as having a mild citrus-cranberry flavor, and are traditionally used to make hibiscus tea in regions of Africa and Asia. This species displays a spectrum of colors through its cultivars and hybrids. It's the national flower of Malaysia. Photographed in Colombia.
