Sabdariffa maculata
Native to Cuba, Hispaniola and western Colombia, it is a shrub of seasonally dry tropical vegetation. Formerly known as Hibiscus maculatus, it has stems armed with recurved prickles. Its leaves vary from undivided to irregularly three-lobed, with coarsely toothed margins. The small bracts forming a ring outside the calyx are undivided, a feature used in botanical keys to distinguish it from related plants. Photographed in Florida.
