Hemerocallis fulva (Day Lily)

Native from China to temperate eastern Asia, this herbaceous perennial forms broad clumps of arching, strap-shaped leaves. Leafless flowering stems carry orange trumpet-shaped blooms with six spreading segments. Each flower lasts only a day, but successive buds prolong the summer display. It spreads rapidly through underground rhizomes and can be propagated by division. It has naturalized in Europe and much of North America and is invasive in parts of the eastern United States and Michigan. All parts are highly toxic to cats and can cause fatal kidney failure. Photographed in Bogotá, Colombia.
