Heliodoxa jacula

Heliodoxa jacula inhabits humid tropical and subtropical forests from southern Honduras through western Panama and into western Colombia and Ecuador. It typically resides between 1,600 and 6,500 feet in elevation, especially along the lower to middle slopes of the Andes. The species prefers shaded, moist environments, including forest edges, secondary growth, and gardens near forested zones. The species is considered widespread within its range and has been assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern due to its relatively large range and presumed stable population.

Males reach approximately 4.3 inches in length and feature a metallic green body with a glittering blue throat and blackish-blue tail.

Females are similar in size but show a green upper body, a white or grayish underside with green spotting, and a plain throat lacking the iridescent coloration seen in males. Both sexes possess a straight black bill suited for accessing nectar from long tubular flowers. Heliodoxa jacula exhibits territorial behavior around flowering shrubs and trees, frequently defending nectar sources from other hummingbirds. It uses hovering and perching techniques to forage and occasionally engages in insect hunting by sallying from a perch.
