Native to regions spanning from Mexico, through Central America to Ecuador, this species thrives in humid tropical environments. It grows as a rhizomatous herbaceous plant, typically reaching heights between 5 and 15 feet, with upright, unbranched pseudostems emerging from underground rhizomes. The inflorescence is characterized by erect, boat-shaped bracts arranged in a two-ranked pattern, displaying a vivid combination of creamy yellow with red cheeks and thin green margins. Each bract encloses small, tubular green flowers that are partially hidden and produce abundant nectar, attracting hummingbirds, which serve as the primary pollinators. The plant is cultivated as an ornamental in tropical and subtropical gardens. The plant contains compounds such as alkaloids and saponins, which can be toxic if ingested, and handling may cause mild skin irritation.
