Helianthus angustifolius (Swamp Sunflower)
Native to the eastern and southern United States, this tall perennial herb grows in moist ground, along streams and near ponds. Underground rhizomes produce upright shoots carrying very narrow green leaves. Branched stems bear clusters of daisy-like flower heads with golden yellow rays surrounding dark purplish-brown centers. The seeds provide food for songbirds. Established plants spread into broad stands, especially where sunlight and moisture are plentiful. Photographed in Florida.
