Hedychium 'Giant Yellow' (Hybrid Ginger Lily)

This cultivated perennial ginger hybrid was selected for especially large flowers and a vigorous, tall habit. Sturdy, thick shoots carry broad leaves and can reach about nine feet in height. The flowering spikes are about a foot long and bear clusters of creamy yellow blossoms with deeper yellow throats. Individual flowers can span about four inches, making the inflorescence conspicuous above the foliage. Like other ginger lilies, it grows from rhizomes that produce successive leafy shoots. Photographed in Florida.
