Hedychium coccineum

Native from the Indian subcontinent to southern China and northern Indochina, it is a perennial herb that grows from underground rhizomes. Its upright leafy shoots reach about five to seven feet tall. Cylindrical flower clusters bear orange to red flowers with a broad, two-lobed lip, narrow curling petals and a long projecting stamen. Orange fruit capsules split open to expose seeds with red fleshy coverings. The species is grown in parks and gardens as an ornamental. Photographed in Armenia, Colombia.
