Haworthiopsis reinwardtii forms dense clusters of dark upright stems covered by tightly packed pointed leaves with pale raised tubercles

Haworthiopsis reinwardtii (Reinwardt’s Haworthiopsis)

Native to the Eastern Cape of South Africa, this small succulent perennial herb grows on rocky hills and cliffs, often sheltered by rocks or taller plants. Narrow, fleshy leaves spiral tightly around short stems and carry conspicuous, flattened white tubercles. New shoots arise from the base and sometimes along the stems, gradually forming dense clumps. Slender flower stalks bear small whitish-pink flowers in spring. Its densely packed leaves and relatively large, bright tubercles help distinguish it from the closely related Haworthiopsis coarctata. It is well suited to containers with freely draining soil and can be propagated from offsets. Photographed in Peru.
