Hamelia macrantha
Native from Costa Rica to Ecuador, this shrub or small tree grows in rainforests and lower cloud forests. Broad leaves are opposite or sometimes arranged in whorls near the branch tips. Terminal or side-positioned clusters carry numerous yellow flowers, with the blossoms arranged along one side of the smaller flowering branches. Each flower has a wide, funnel-shaped tube and short lobes, enclosing the stamens. Elliptical berries change from red to glossy black as they mature. In Costa Rica, it also grows in secondary scrub and along cultivated field margins. Photographed in Colombia.
