Hamelia cuprea has an orange bell-shaped flower with a deep red throat beside elongated yellow-green buds

Hamelia cuprea (Antillean Firebush)

Native to Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, this large shrub or small tree has elliptical leaves arranged in whorls of three. The foliage can develop reddish or coppery tones as it matures. Clusters of bright yellow, bell-shaped flowers may show reddish lengthwise stripes and turn reddish orange with age. Egg-shaped berries follow the flowers, becoming reddish black at maturity. Its nectar attracts butterflies, bees and birds. Established plants tolerate drought, and the shrub is used in hedges and butterfly gardens. Photographed in Florida.
