Halenia weddelliana bears bright yellow-green flowers with long radiating spurs above small opposite leaves in low vegetation

Halenia weddelliana

Native to the Andes from Colombia through Ecuador and Peru to Bolivia, this perennial herb grows in mountain grasslands near and above the upper forest limit. Upright stems rise from a rhizome and carry opposite leaves, with the upper leaves smaller and stalkless. Terminal flower clusters bear yellow-green, bell-shaped blossoms. Four long, spreading spurs project from each flower and can curve slightly, giving the flowers a distinctive antler-like appearance. The fruit is an elongated, egg-shaped capsule. It can produce seeds asexually, without fertilization, a form of reproduction known as apomixis. Photographed in Colombia.
