Goeppertia louisae
Native to the rainforests of Rio de Janeiro in southeastern Brazil, it is an evergreen perennial herb that forms upright clumps from underground rhizomes. It typically grows two to three feet tall. Its glossy leaves have pale green or creamy yellow feather-like markings and purple undersides. Small white flowers emerge from overlapping bracts in compact spikes, although houseplants rarely bloom. The leaves fold upward in the evening and reopen in daylight through changes in water pressure at the joint below each blade. Photographed in Panama.
