Goeppertia inocephala
Native from southern Mexico through Central America into tropical South America and Trinidad, this perennial herb grows in moist forests. It has broad leaves whose undersides lack a powdery wax coating. Rounded flower heads develop above the foliage and continue to age while new flowers appear. Fruits become a conspicuous part of the head, sometimes occupying most of it before flowering finishes. In Panama, flowering is concentrated near the start of the rainy season, and the last fruits can persist into the following dry season. Photographed in Colombia.
