Gladiolus × hortulanus (Garden Gladiolus)

This garden hybrid group was developed from several Gladiolus species, chiefly South African parents, rather than originating as a wild species. Robust, upright plants grow from underground corms and bear long, blade-shaped leaves. Tall spikes carry large flowers with unequal, spreading lobes and curved tubes. Flower colors range from white and pastel shades to vivid yellow, orange, red and purple, often with contrasting markings. These gladioli are widely cultivated for garden displays and cut flowers and occasionally escape from cultivation. The plant is poisonous if eaten, with the highest concentration of toxins in its corms. Photographed in Florida.
