Gatun Lake, Panama

Gatun Lake is a 164 square mile artificial reservoir at the heart of the Panama Canal, formed between 1907 and 1913 by damming the Chagres River. The lake plays a vital role in canal operations, providing the water necessary to operate the locks and allowing ships to transit a large portion of the canal route by floating across its surface. Beyond its engineering importance, Gatun Lake is a haven for biodiversity. The surrounding rainforest is rich in wildlife, including howler monkeys, toucans, crocodiles, and countless bird species. Popular activities include boat tours to see the ships passing through the canal, fishing, birdwatching, and eco-tours to islands.
