Gardenia carinata has an orange pinwheel-shaped flower with broad curved lobes beside glossy green leaves

Gardenia carinata (Golden Gardenia)

Native to peninsular Thailand and Malaysia, this evergreen tree grows in lowland and hill forests. Elliptic to spoon-shaped leaves have prominent veins and hairy undersides. Solitary, fragrant flowers open white, then become yellow and orange over several days. The spreading flower lobes form a pinwheel around a long tube. Five strong keels run along the calyx, and rounded fruits develop distinct lengthwise ridges. The tree is cultivated in tropical parks and gardens for its colorful, scented flowers. Photographed in Florida.
