Large Fuchsia triphylla shrub covered in hanging red flower clusters beneath a blue sky

Fuchsia triphylla

Native to Hispaniola, the island shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic, this perennial shrub is grown for its long flowering season. Its hanging, tubular flowers are orange-red to scarlet, and its leaves often occur in sets of three. The leaf undersides can be reddish or maroon. It has been an important parent of garden fuchsia hybrids, including the group known as Triphylla hybrids. Softwood or semi-ripe cuttings provide new plants. Photographed in the department of Antioquia, Colombia.
