Cluster of Eurybia divaricata flowers with narrow white petals and golden-yellow central discs set against dark green foliage
Eurybia divaricata

Eurybia divaricata, commonly known as white wood aster, is a perennial wildflower native to the eastern United States. It typically inhabits dry to mesic deciduous woodlands and rocky slopes, thriving in partial to full shade. This species is distinguished by its branching stems that can reach up to 3 feet (0.9 m) tall, topped with airy clusters of daisy-like blooms. Each flower features 5–10 narrow white ray florets surrounding a central disc of yellow florets that mature to a purplish hue as they age. The plant’s heart-shaped, sharply toothed basal leaves form a dense rosette early in the season, while upper leaves are smaller and lanceolate. Eurybia divaricata is valued in naturalized and shade gardens for its ability to bloom reliably in late summer and fall when few other woodland perennials are in flower. Its tolerance for dry shade and low-maintenance growth habit make it a resilient choice for understory planting. Photgraphed in Virginia.
