Euphorbia lugardiae has pale pointed bracts around reddish-ringed flower cups clustered among green buds and leaves

Euphorbia lugardiae

Native to southern Africa, this succulent perennial grows among rocks in sandy woodland and wooded grassland, and sometimes on shaded termite mounds. Thick stems branch from the base and have shallow bumps arranged in a diamond pattern. Fleshy leaves crowd near their tips. Small, cup-like flower clusters emerge beside the upper leaves, with pale glands around the cups. The fruits have paired fleshy ridges along their seams and hang on curved stalks. Its milky sap irritates skin and eyes, and the plant is harmful if eaten. Photographed in Florida.
