Euphorbia hypericifolia (Graceful Spurge)
Native to tropical and subtropical America, this branching herb has spreading or upright stems and paired, elliptical to oblong leaves with minute teeth along their margins. Its tiny flowers occur in specialized cup-like clusters called cyathia, each containing a female flower surrounded by several male flowers. Three-lobed capsules develop afterward and split to release small, wrinkled seeds. Although often encountered as a weed, the species also has ornamental forms with airy sprays of pale floral structures. It has been introduced beyond its native range. Its milky sap irritates skin and eyes, and the plant is harmful if eaten. Photographed in Colombia.
