Eugenia luschnathiana has a round glossy orange fruit with persistent green calyx lobes hanging beside a green leaf

Eugenia luschnathiana (Pitomba)

Native to Brazil, this small fruit tree occurs along the Atlantic coast and is known as pitomba or pitomba-da-bahia. Its leathery leaves are darker above and paler beneath, and white flowers precede the crop. Round to oblong fruits ripen orange-yellow, with a thin, smooth skin around juicy, pleasantly tart flesh and a few seeds. The fruit is eaten fresh and used in jellies and sweets. The tree also has ornamental value for its pinkish trunk and has been cultivated beyond its native range. Photographed in Florida.
