Espeletia hartwegiana (Frailejones)

Endemic to Colombia, it is a woody, rosette-forming plant of the Andean páramos. Its long leaves cluster at the top of an upright stem and have a dense woolly covering. Old, dead leaves remain attached along the stem for a long time. The flowering branches bear daisy-like heads with yellow ray flowers surrounding smaller, brownish central florets. It occurs in high-mountain grasslands and shrublands. Photographed in Puracé National Park, Colombia.
