Erythrochiton brasiliensis (Star of Brazil)
Native to Brazil, this understory shrub or small tree develops an upright, sparsely branched form. Its crown can catch fallen leaves and other forest litter. White flowers emerge from a conspicuous red to reddish-orange calyx. Each flower has five fertile stamens; after the anthers fall, the style elongates from the floral throat. The plant is cultivated in tropical botanical gardens beyond its native range for its contrasting flowers. Photographed in Colombia.
