Red Erythrina verna flowers cover branching tree stems against a clear blue sky

Erythrina verna

Native to Bolivia and Brazil, this coral tree can reach about thirty-three to eighty-two feet tall. Red flowers develop in conspicuous clusters, with flowering recorded in August and September in southeastern Brazil. The species belongs to the pea family and produces pod-like fruits later in the season. It is known locally as mulungu, along with several related Erythrina trees. The flowers provide nectar for birds, which also catch insects attracted to the blooms. Photographed in Florida.
