Erigeron karvinskianus (Mexican Fleabane)
Native from Mexico through Central America to northern South America, this perennial herb forms spreading, interlaced mats of slender branching stems. It has escaped gardens and rockeries in Australia, where it grows in moist disturbed places. Narrow leaves and small daisy-like flower heads cover the growths. The heads open white and develop pink to purplish tones as they age, often producing several colors on the same plant. Small seeds have bristles that assist their spread. Widely grown as an ornamental, the species has become established beyond its native range and frequently grows in wall crevices, clearings and roadsides. It is invasive in New Zealand, where it competes with native plants. Photographed in Colombia.
