Originating from the high-altitude regions near Bogotá, it thrives in the tropical and southern parts of South America, spreading through its rhizomatous geophyte habit which allows it to establish extensive underground stems from which roots grow out. Notable for its traditional medicinal applications, to treat various ailments including stomachaches, foot pain, fractures, and kidney infections. Studies on its diuretic effects have indicated significant increases in urinary sodium, potassium, and chloride levels in humans, showcasing its high efficacy as a diuretic. Photographed in Bogotá.
