Epidendrum pseudepidendrum flowers spread slender yellow-green segments around hanging white lips against a dark background

Epidendrum pseudepidendrum

Native to southern Costa Rica and northern Panama, this orchid grows on the branches of large trees in wet forests. Upright canes reach about one and a half to six and a half feet tall. Arching flower clusters develop near their tops, with several blooms opening successively. The species is known for dark green flower segments surrounding a contrasting orange lip. Its name reflects an earlier placement in the genus Pseudepidendrum. Photographed in Ecuador.
