Encephalartos whitelockii spreads long arching leaves above a thick trunk and hanging brown cones

Encephalartos whitelockii (Whitelock’s Cycad)

Native to western Uganda, this cycad occurs in the Mpanga River Gorge. Its trunk supports a spreading crown of long, feather-like leaves. Reproduction takes place through cones, with male and female structures borne on separate plants. The species is critically endangered, and its restricted habitat is affected by fires and cutting. Conservation projects in the gorge have worked with local communities on habitat protection and the regeneration of young plants. Photographed in Florida.
