Pink-red Emilia fosbergii flowerheads form rounded clusters beside narrow unopened buds

Emilia fosbergii (Florida Tasselflower)

Native to tropical and subtropical America, this short-lived annual herb occurs in fields and disturbed ground. It commonly reaches about two feet tall. Small crimson to scarlet flowerheads form loose clusters above the foliage. Each head contains numerous narrow florets and lacks the broad outer rays of many daisies. The small fruits carry tufts of soft white hairs that assist their dispersal. Photographed in Colombia.
