Cream Elaeocarpus hygrophilus flowers hang in a cluster with deeply fringed petals and golden stamens

Elaeocarpus hygrophilus

Native from Assam to mainland Southeast Asia, this evergreen tree grows along lowland streams and in wet tropical forests. It can reach about thirty-nine feet tall. Flower clusters arise from the leaf axils, with petals deeply divided into fine fringes. Oval fruits contain a single seed within a hard inner layer. In parts of its native range, the fruits are preserved in brine for local consumption. Photographed in Florida.
