Aquarius paniculatus
Native from eastern Mexico through Central America to tropical South America, this aquatic herb is rooted in flooded ground. It develops upright leaves on stalks that are triangular in cross-section. The leaf blades are usually lance-shaped. Flowering stems rise above the leaves and carry several tiers of white flowers with numerous stamens. Small, ribbed fruits develop after flowering. The species grows in marshes, roadside ditches and other inundated habitats. Its underground rhizome can survive dry periods and fire. It is grown in aquariums and ponds and also provides forage for grazing animals and fish. Photographed in Florida.
