Red Echeveria setosa flowers with yellow tips emerge among hairy buds above a succulent rosette

Echeveria setosa (Mexican Firecracker)

Native to Mexico, this evergreen succulent forms low, nearly stemless rosettes. Dense white hairs cover its spoon-shaped leaves, giving the plant a soft-looking surface. Upright stalks bear urn-shaped red and yellow flowers arranged along one side, with flowering beginning in late spring. Mature plants spread through offsets to form a low mat. The bright flowers account for the common name Mexican firecracker. Photographed in Colombia.
