Ebenopsis ebano

A thorny evergreen tree native to northeastern Mexico and southern Texas, Ebenopsis ebano grows in dry subtropical woodland and thorn scrub. Its dark, dense wood is exceptionally hard and durable. Rounded clusters of cream-white flowers are followed by thick curved pods, and the small divided leaves form a compact canopy adapted to heat and drought. Photographed in Colombia.
