Dyckia choristaminea
Native to southern Brazil, Uruguay and northeastern Argentina, this small perennial bromeliad grows in subtropical habitats, including rocky sites. It forms compact rosettes of narrow leaves with toothed margins. Upright flower stalks arise beside the foliage and carry yellow blooms. The flowers are unusually large in proportion to the rosettes and have a more open, bell-shaped form than the tightly tubular flowers of many other Dyckia species. Their strong, sweet fragrance is another distinctive feature. Plants can form groups of rosettes as offsets develop. Photographed in Florida.
