Dracaena surculosa is native to tropical West and Central Africa. This evergreen shrub grows naturally as an understory plant in lowland tropical forests, where it spreads by underground rhizomes. It is a slow-growing species that typically reaches a height of 3 to 4 feet in natural habitats. The plant produces distinctive clusters of small, tubular flowers borne in umbels on long, slender pedicels. Each flower has reddish outer tepals with pale yellow interiors and prominent stamens that extend beyond the petals, creating a fine, threadlike appearance. In horticulture, this species has become a popular indoor plant in Europe, North America, and Asia due to its tolerance of low light. Photographed in Ecuador.
