Disocactus ackermannii flower with large scarlet red petals and a cluster of white stamens emerging from the center
Disocactus ackermannii

Disocactus ackermannii, commonly known as the orchid cactus, is native to the tropical forests of southeastern Mexico where it grows as an epiphyte on trees and occasionally as a lithophyte on rocks. Unlike desert cacti, it thrives in shaded, humid environments of montane forests, often at elevations between 3,300 and 6,600 feet. Its flattened stems act as leaves, adapting it to absorb light efficiently under dense canopies. The species is renowned for its striking flowers, which are large, funnel-shaped, and intensely red, sometimes showing orange or magenta tones depending on the angle of light. The blossoms typically open during the day and remain open for several days, with the central stamens forming a conspicuous cluster. Photographed in Ecuador.
