Dichorisandra villosula
Native to tropical South America, it is a perennial herb of wet forests, including the Amazon basin. Its stems may scramble through surrounding vegetation or remain upright, sometimes with hanging tips. The alternate, lance-shaped leaves are arranged in two rows, with pointed tips and hairy undersides. The stems, leaf sheaths and sepals are also hairy. Upright flower clusters bear blue-purple flowers with white petal bases. Each flower has six stamens whose elongated anthers release pollen through small pores at their tips. The rounded, three-chambered capsules contain seeds with orange fleshy coverings. Photographed in Ecuador.
