Delostoma integrifolium

Native to the Andes from Peru through Ecuador and Colombia to northwestern Venezuela, it is a shrub or tree commonly planted in parks in its home region. Its simple, oval to oblong leaves have three main veins arising from the base, smooth to shallowly toothed margins and fine hairs underneath. Small flower clusters form at the ends of branches. The slightly curved, tubular flowers open into broad, bell-shaped mouths and range from dark pink to reddish purple. Flattened, elliptic seed capsules turn nearly black when dry. Their thin brown seeds are surrounded by broad, papery wings. Photographed in the Cocora Valley, Colombia.
