Delosperma cooperi

Native to South Africa’s Free State and Lesotho, this succulent subshrub forms low, dense mats. Its fleshy green leaves are nearly cylindrical, with bladder-like surface cells that catch the light and give them a glistening appearance. Glossy, purplish-pink flowers have numerous narrow petals surrounding a small cluster of pale stamens. Flowering is concentrated in summer. The species occurs naturally at higher elevations and can withstand frost. Its water-storing leaves help it tolerate drought, and it is widely cultivated as a ground cover and rock-garden plant. Its dry seed capsules open when wetted, releasing seeds during rainy conditions. Cuttings root readily, allowing the mats to be propagated. Photographed in Peru.
