Dahlia pinnata


Originating in cultivation in Mexico, this tuberous perennial herb is grown for its colorful flower heads. Garden dahlias have been bred into many forms, from open, daisy-like heads to densely double pompons and large decorative blooms. Their underground tubers store reserves and allow new shoots to grow after a resting period. Photographed in the central Andes mountain range of Colombia.
