Cymbidium Hybrids
Developed in cultivation by crossing Cymbidium species and earlier hybrids, these orchids form clumps of swollen stem bases called pseudobulbs, surrounded by long, evergreen, strap-shaped leaves. Flower stems may stand upright, arch outward or hang down, depending on the hybrid. Their flowers range from white and cream to yellow, green, pink, purple and red, often with contrasting spots or streaks. The three-lobed lip has raised side lobes and two ridges or swellings near its base. Standard and miniature hybrids differ in plant size, while flowering time and fragrance vary with their parentage. Photographed in Bogotá and the department of Antioquia, Colombia.
