Croton coriaceus

Native to central Colombia and Ecuador, this shrub or tree grows in moist Andean habitats. In Colombia, it occurs at about 8,500 to 9,800 feet. Like other members of its genus, it has separate male and female flowers and develops small, three-part seed capsules. Its leaves provide food for the caterpillars of the moth Drymoea veliterna, which feed in groups. The species is classified as Vulnerable. Photographed in Bogotá, Colombia.
