Coussapoa (species unidentified)
Native from Mexico through Central America into tropical South America, this genus of trees and shrubs is associated with tropical forests. Many species begin life on another tree and develop aerial roots that descend toward the ground. Their leathery, undivided leaves are arranged spirally along the stems, and the young leaves are enclosed by stipules that leave scars around the branches when they fall. Male and female flowers occur on separate plants, gathered into small, rounded heads that may be carried on branching stalks. The tiny fruits are enclosed by enlarged, fleshy flower coverings. Photographed in Colombia.
