Corytoplectus cutucuensis

Corytoplectus cutucuensis is a rare species of flowering plant native to the cloud forests of the Cordillera del Cóndor and adjacent regions of southeastern Ecuador. It is part of a group of Gesneriaceae recognized for their velvety foliage and tubular, brightly colored flowers. The species is distinguished by its compact habit, thick textured leaves with a dark green upper surface and purple undersides, and clusters of tubular red to orange blossoms with lighter throats. It grows in moist understory environments between approximately 3,600 and 6,600 feet in elevation, often associated with shaded slopes and areas of high humidity. Photographed in Ecuador.
