Cornutia pyramidata
Native from central Mexico through Central America and the Caribbean to tropical South America, this shrub or tree in the mint family grows about 10 to 33 feet tall. Its young branches are four-sided, and the large, opposite leaves have small glandular dots. Blue or purple tubular flowers grow in branched clusters at the ends of stems. The small, rounded fruits turn blue, purple, or black as they ripen. In Panama, it flowers and fruits throughout the year, most abundantly from May to October, and is cultivated as an ornamental. Photographed in Panama.
