Anacis verticillata (Coreopsis verticillata)
Native to eastern Canada and the eastern United States, this perennial herb reaches about three feet tall. Creeping rhizomes allow it to form expanding clumps. Its opposite, nearly stalkless leaves are divided into slender, threadlike segments that give the foliage a finely textured appearance. Branched stems carry daisy-like flowerheads with usually eight yellow ray florets surrounding numerous small, tubular yellow disk florets. The dry, flattened fruits are broadly oblong to egg-shaped, with each enclosing one seed. The species grows in open woods and woodland edges, often on sandy soils, and is widely cultivated as an ornamental. Photographed in Virginia.
