Cordia taguahyensis
Native to Brazil, it is a shrub reaching about sixteen feet tall in tropical rain forest. Its persistent leaves are elliptical or widest above the middle, with smooth edges, pointed tips and bases that taper into short stalks. Branched flower clusters form at the ends of the stems. The large white flowers have a funnel-shaped corolla and five stamens. The round fruits become white when ripe and remain partly surrounded by a persistent, cup-shaped calyx. They have a mucilaginous flesh around a hard inner stone. Photographed in Florida.
