Consolea rubescens cactus flower with orange petals and a cluster of pink filaments in the center
Consolea rubescens

Consolea rubescens, commonly called the roadkill cactus, is native to the Caribbean, especially Cuba, and has also been introduced to Florida where it has naturalized. It is a shrubby cactus that can grow into small tree-like forms up to 20 feet tall, with a trunk supporting broad, flattened pads. Unlike many cacti, older pads of this species become woody and persistent, contributing to its distinctive upright habit. The flowers of Consolea rubescens are typically orange to reddish-orange, with many narrow petals surrounding a dense cluster of pink stamens, giving the bloom a vivid and textured appearance. After flowering, the plant produces fleshy, spiny fruits that remain attached for long periods. Photographed in Florida
